About Machel…

Machel Spence

I started photographing mushrooms and other fungi in September of 2008, and completely fell in love with every aspect of them. I accompanied my daughter's class on a camping trip to Mount Rainier National Park and saw an incredible variety of fungi, learning how much they vary in size, shape and toxicity. I have documented over 600 species in Washington alone, and thousands remain to be found.

I live in Seattle Washington with my husband and daughter, and can frequently be seen photographing fungi in low-light environments with my lower torso sticking out of a thicket. My love for mushrooms and slime-mold is reflected in every photograph I take. I want people to feel they are getting a view of the forest floor as they have never seen it before, and to acquire a passion for the conservation of our wild forests and its fungi inhabitants.
